All of your snowy fancies will come true in Finnish Lapland, a winter wonderland of pink skies, husky sled rides, frosted fir trees, scalding hot chocolate, and twinkling lights. Rovaniemi, the official residence of Santa Claus (and he’s got to know the greatest location to live), is situated right in the middle of it all, sitting on the brink of the Arctic Circle.
Winter in the far north is full of magic, from the Northern Lights to reindeer sleigh rides, and Rovaniemi makes for an excellent Arctic vacation. Here is our list of the best winter activities in Rovaniemi, together with information on how to travel there, where to stay, and what to carry.
Will it be dark all the time?
How cold will it be and will it always be dark were my two main concerns about visiting Rovaniemi in the winter. Lapland’s winter season lasts from December to March. On December 21, which is the shortest day of the year, the sun rises at roughly 11 a.m. and sets at 1.20 p.m., giving you less than 2.5 hours of daylight.
But that doesn’t imply the remainder of the day is completely in the dark. You can still see to move around because it is twilight between 9.30am and 3.30pm, and there are lovely, lengthy sunrises and sunsets. By late February, there are nine hours of daylight each day. The days also become longer swiftly.
Things to do in Rovaniemi during winter
One of the main draws to Lapland is the Aurora Borealis, also known as the Northern Lights. It’s also the one thing, though, that you can’t be certain you’ll see. The best times to observe the Northern Lights in Lapland are at the start or end of the season rather than in the middle, which lasts from mid-August to early April.
The Northern Lights can only be seen under the correct climatic circumstances, which occur approximately every other night or 150 days a year in Rovaniemi. Unfortunately, they were not visible while we were there (I suppose this gives me a reason to go back!).
Go to the Santa Claus Village
Santa Claus Village, which is 8 kilometers outside the city center, is the center of all holiday celebrations in Rovaniemi, whether or not it is Christmas. In the weeks leading up to Christmas, the park is extremely crowded, but after the New Year, things settle down, making it a fantastic time to come. A row of lanterns and a strip of blue lights symbolize the Arctic Circle, which also passes directly through the center of the community.
Husky Sledding
The #1 item on my Lapland bucket list was to follow a pack of Siberian Huskies while they raced through a forest of snow-covered pine trees. Depending on how long and how much you want to spend, there are many huskies sledding experiences in and around Rovaniemi.
You may pet the huskies and get a taste of what it’s like to ride a husky sled at the Husky Park next to Santa Claus Village. They provide unreserved 500-meter, 2-kilometer, or 5-kilometer circuits. Hold on to your hats (literally), be prepared for the dogs to move quickly, and dress warmly for the brisk wind.
